Wire Brushes with Lead Bore

At the Anvil Tool Company we take pride in being able to supply those items that are hard to find, however one regular request has always proved to be elusive.

Wire brushes with a lead centre bore were traditionally used on bench polishing machines using a tapered threaded spindle. The idea being that when the brush is fitted the spindle cuts a thread into the lead centre, then when the machine is running it rotates in the same direction, thereby locking the brush in place.

We recently received an enquiry for one of these brushes from retired chartered engineer Mike Wooldridge and the problem of supplying these brushes were explained.

Mike purchased a 200mm stainless steel rotary wire brush with a standard bore and set about creating the lead centre, which can be seen in the pictures above.

Mike has reported the brush has been working hard and has offered this service to us.
So customers who particularly require this type of wire brush, it can be done…

Thanks Mike, another problem solved…

Recommendations for Safe Rotary Wire Brush Use

Safety Information

All machine driven brushes require as with all other rotary tools, that the required safety precautions are observed to assure operator and work area safety.

Personal Protection

All operators and other personnel in areas where rotary brushes are being used must wear safety goggles or face shields and appropriate protective clothing.

For your own safety – Wear Eye Protection!
Brush Inspection, storage and handling

All brushes should be carefully checked before use, a rusted, damaged or faulty brush should not be used. Check for distortion of the brush fill that can cause imbalance and excessive vibration when the brush is run.
Store brushes in original boxes. Brushes should not be exposed to heat, high humidity, acids, fumes or liquids that can result in deterioration of the filaments, and subsequently, premature failure.
Do not allow foreign material to accumulate in brush face.

Brush Mounting

Proper maintenance of machines and power tools is essential to keep them in a safe operating condition. Special operating instructions should be closely followed. Safety guards must be kept in place at all times. Do not use a brush larger than the machine was designed for. Provide proper ventilation and/or exhaust systems on all brushing operations.

Rotary Brushes with centre Bore – Do not mount and operate the brush if the spindle RPM exceeds the speed for which the brush is rated. The brush centre bore should be appropriate to the spindle diameter to ensure a free fit. The spindle length should be sufficient to permit a full locking nut mounting. The direction of the spindle thread should be in relation to the direction of rotation so that the locking nut will tend to tighten as the spindle revolves. When flanges are used, they should be clean, identical in size and radial bearing surface to avoid cross-bending pressure on the brush.

On pedestal machines a work rest of rigid and adjustable design should be used to support the work-piece while brushing. Adjust the work rest for a maximum opening of 3mm (1/8″) to the brush face. This will prevent the work from being forced between the brush and rest. The work rest should be adjusted only when the brush is not in motion.

Rotary Brushes with Shank – Do not mount and operate the brush if the spindle RPM exceeds the speed for which brush is rated. The shank should be fully inserted into the tool. This is especially necessary when working with high RPM applications, for example on pneumatic tools. Generally it is best if the shank protrudes out only 10mm (3/8″) when the brush is mounted.

Peripheral Speed

The max RPM indicated either on the brush or the packaging are safety figures by which the brushes can be used without danger. Do not exceed these figures under any circumstances. In most cases a lower RPM is sufficient to gain an optimal result.
